Accessibility Statement

Our aim

MortgageSkip aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA.

The specific website conformance requirement under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act applies to public sector organisations and to businesses with 50 or more employees, so it does not currently apply to us. We are aiming at that standard anyway, because a tool people use while worrying about money should work for everyone. Our duty to accommodate under the Ontario Human Rights Code applies regardless of our size.

What has been done

• Semantic headings and landmarks so screen readers can navigate the page structure
• Every form control has a visible, associated label rather than placeholder-only text
• Visible keyboard focus indicators, and the whole site is operable by keyboard
• Calculator results update in place as you type, so no result is hidden behind a submit step
• Text and background colours chosen to hold contrast at normal body sizes
• Descriptive alternative text on photographs
• Layouts that reflow down to small screens without horizontal scrolling

Known gaps

We would rather be honest about this than claim full conformance. We are aware of the following:

• The site has not yet been through a formal third-party accessibility audit, nor testing with a range of assistive technologies
• Calculator results change as you type, and those updates are not yet announced to screen reader users through a live region
• Financial figures are presented as text and are not yet available in another format

These are on the list to fix rather than being treated as acceptable.
